Eating disorders

Eating disorders are complex health conditions that require a team of professionals, including registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs). At Ceenutrition, the highly trained and experienced RDNs specialize in the nutrition management of eating disorders. They work closely with you, your therapist, your primary care provider, and other experts on your team to support your recovery.

What are eating disorders?

Eating disorders are serious conditions associated with eating behaviors that negatively affect a person’s physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being.

Most people with eating disorders spend a lot of time thinking and worrying about their weight, body shape, and food, which leads to dangerous eating behaviors. Their eating habits may negatively affect their health and cause serious damage to vital organs.

Eating disorders aren’t a lifestyle choice but a mental health condition.

What are the types of eating disorders?

There are three common types of eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge-eating disorder (BED).

Anorexia nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is a serious and potentially life-threatening eating disorder. People with anorexia nervosa have a distorted view of their body and weight and an intense fear of weight gain.

They use extreme efforts to maintain control over their weight, which may affect health and daily activities.

Bulimia

People with bulimia struggle with frequent cycles of binge-eating and purging. During a binge, you may feel as though you have no control over your food intake. The binge causes feelings of guilt, shame, and fear of weight gain that trigger the desire to purge.

Purging may include forced vomiting, use of laxatives, or hours of exercise.

BED

With BED, you may feel as though you have no control over your eating and consume large amounts of food in a short period of time. After a binge, you may feel shame and guilt. Though similar to bulimia, people with BED don’t purge.

Many people with BED eat in hiding.

How are eating disorders managed?

Getting help during the early stages of an eating disorder may help prevent additional health complications and other mental health disorders like anxiety and depression. Treatment for eating disorders is personalized based on individual needs and family dynamics.

Treatment may include:
